Kim Byung-hwan, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, visited Mangwon Market in Seoul on the 24th to check the prices and supply status of essential goods.
Through a meeting with merchants, Vice Minister Kim listened to on-site opinions and directly purchased essential goods and holiday gift sets using Onnuri gift certificates, while checking the progress of discount support for agricultural, livestock, and marine products.
Vice Minister Kim emphasized that for the next three weeks starting last week, they plan to supply 16 essential goods at the largest scale ever, especially focusing on supplying more than 120,000 tons of apples and pears, which is the usual supply volume during the Lunar New Year period. He also explained the system regarding credit card billing discounts on purchases of agricultural and livestock products.
Vice Minister Kim stated, "Due to last year's abnormal climate, prices of fruits such as apples and pears have been strong, so the prices of essential goods are still not low. However, until the Lunar New Year holiday, we plan to intensively manage the average prices of essential goods at levels lower than last year through the release of government stockpiles and discount support."
In particular, he mentioned that related ministries will go to the field to check the prices and supply status of essential goods, and through the Essential Goods Supply Stabilization Task Force and the Vice Ministers' Meeting on Prices, they will promptly respond if additional measures are needed.
