Relatively Warm on the Weekend... Cold Air Moves South on the Night of the 21st

On Saturday the 20th, the whole country is expected to be mostly cloudy with rain or snow falling in various areas nationwide. Although it is Daehan (大寒), a solar term meaning "severe cold," the daytime high temperatures are expected to be milder than usual, ranging from 3 to 9 degrees Celsius.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that the country will be mostly cloudy with rain or snow in Gangwon Yeongdong, southern regions, and Jeju Island, expanding to most areas nationwide by evening. Rain or snow is expected in the Chungcheong region from the morning, and in southern Gyeonggi and Gangwon Yeongseo in the afternoon. From 6 p.m., rain or snow will spread to most areas nationwide except Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi.


The morning low temperatures will range from minus 1 degree to 11 degrees Celsius, significantly warmer than the average (minus 11.2 to 0.0 degrees Celsius), and the daytime highs will be between 3 and 9 degrees Celsius, higher than the average of 0.8 to 8.0 degrees Celsius. At 8 a.m., temperatures in major cities are Seoul 3.6°C, Incheon 3.9°C, Daejeon 5.9°C, Gwangju 5.5°C, Daegu 6.1°C, Ulsan 6.9°C, and Busan 7.4°C.


On the 20th, a high wind warning is in effect for the southern offshore waters of the southern West Sea, the northern outer offshore waters of the southern West Sea, the East Sea, the South Sea, and the waters around Jeju Island. Winds will blow very strongly at speeds of 35 to 65 km/h (10 to 18 m/s), and waves will be very high at 2.0 to 5.0 meters, so vessels engaged in navigation or fishing should exercise special caution.


In Jeju Island, parts of the southern coast of Jeollanam-do, and the coastal areas of Gyeongsangnam-do where strong wind warnings are issued, winds may reach gusts of 70 km/h (20 m/s) or more until the morning of the 21st. Careful management of facilities and safety precautions are necessary.


On Sunday the 21st, rain or snow will fall mainly in Gangwon Yeongdong, with particularly heavy and significant snowfall expected in the Gangwon mountain areas. From the night of the 21st, the precipitation area will expand again, increasing the number of places experiencing rain or snow. From the 22nd, temperatures are expected to drop, bringing colder weather.
