In the fourth quarter of last year, the number of chickens and ducks, including laying hens and broilers, increased thanks to the rise in egg prices. The number of cattle decreased due to a drop in Hanwoo prices.
According to the "4th Quarter Livestock Trends" released by Statistics Korea on the 19th, the number of laying hens raised was 77.202 million, an increase of 3.014 million (4.1%) compared to the same period last year and 1.076 million (1.4%) compared to the previous quarter.
Although the number of hens under 3 months decreased, the number of hens over 6 months increased due to a reduction in the culling of old laying hens caused by the rise in egg prices.
The number of broilers raised was 94.115 million, up 5.402 million (6.1%) from the same period last year and 4.261 million (4.7%) from the previous quarter, while the number of ducks raised was 6.538 million, an increase of 544,000 (9.1%) compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, the number of Hanwoo and beef cattle raised was 3.62 million, down 106,000 (-2.9%) from the same period last year and 132,000 (-3.5%) from the previous quarter. This was due to a decrease in breeding intentions and an increase in cow slaughter caused by the decline in Hanwoo prices, resulting in a decrease in the number of cattle under 1 year old. The number of dairy cows raised was 387,000, down 3,000 (-0.8%) compared to the same period last year.
The number of pigs raised was 11.089 million, down 35,000 (-0.3%) from the same period last year and 309,000 (-2.7%) from the previous quarter.
