Support for 4.5 Million Servings of 'Cheonwon's Breakfast'... Doubling the Amount

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 18th that it will significantly expand the 'Thousand-Won Breakfast' project, which has been promoted in collaboration with universities to spread healthy breakfast eating habits among young people, to a scale of 4.5 million servings this year, about twice the size of last year.

This project supports young people, who have a high rate of skipping breakfast, to have breakfast without burden. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs provides 1,000 won per student for meal expenses, and the schools cover the remaining costs so that students can have breakfast for 1,000 won. The project expanded from 490,000 servings in 2022 to 2.33 million servings in 2023, and this year, the target and budget have been further increased to 4.5 million servings.

Additionally, to alleviate the financial burden on schools, 15 out of 17 cities and provinces nationwide have established additional support plans amounting to about 3.5 billion won, doubling compared to the previous year, which is expected to provide quality breakfasts to more students.

As the scale of support expands, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to strengthen project management and promotion. To prevent poor-quality meals, they will conduct on-site inspections of meal plans by university, hold meetings between schools and students, and carry out surveys as part of close field management. Furthermore, they plan to actively discover and spread various excellent cases so that eating breakfast can become a cultural norm among young people.

Jeon Han-young, Director of Food Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, "This project expansion is part of the government's efforts to reduce students' meal expenses in an era of high prices and to provide a proper warm breakfast. We expect that forming healthy breakfast habits will increase rice consumption among future generations and have a positive effect on maintaining rice supply and demand balance."
