Gypsy Rose Blanchard became known to the world in June 2015 when her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, was found murdered at their home in Missouri. At the time, Gypsy Rose, who was in her early twenties, used a wheelchair and appeared to have some cognitive impairments. During the investigation, authorities discovered that she was actually able to walk and had no medical issues.

Investigators suspected that Gypsy Rose and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, whom she met online, had conspired to kill Dee Dee. Evidence was found that the two had planned Dee Dee’s murder together.

Charged with second-degree murder, Gypsy Rose confessed to the crime the following year and revealed that Dee Dee had abused her. Under a plea agreement with the prosecution, she was sentenced to the minimum term of 10 years.

Attorney Michael Stanfield stated at a 2016 press conference that after reviewing Gypsy Rose’s medical records from the past 15 years and interviewing neighbors and friends, it was revealed that her mother had confined her for a long time and physically and medically abused her by giving unnecessary medications and subjecting her to unnecessary procedures.

Dee Dee claimed that her daughter Gypsy Rose had been ill since infancy and deceived doctors and others by pretending Gypsy had leukemia at age eight, thereby receiving financial support.

The case attracted significant media attention at the time. Dee Dee Blanchard was known as a case of "Munchausen syndrome by proxy," a psychological disorder where a parent or guardian exaggerates or fabricates a child’s illness to gain attention. However, it is reported that Dee Dee was never officially diagnosed with this disorder before her death.

Gypsy Rose’s story was made into an HBO documentary that aired in 2017. In 2019, it was adapted into an eight-episode drama titled The Act, which was released in South Korea through the streaming service Watcha.

Gypsy Rose, who served over seven years in prison, was released on parole on the 28th of last month. Godejohn, who committed the crime with her, is serving a life sentence without parole for first-degree murder.

Gypsy Rose shares photos of her daily life with her husband, whom she met while incarcerated, on Instagram. She created social media accounts before her release, and within a week after being released, she gained 6.2 million followers on Instagram and 6.4 million on TikTok. A TikTok post where Gypsy sends greetings to her supporters after her release received a total of 16.8 million likes.
