Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has been operating the “Bright Organization” project to tidy up the homes of dementia patients and recently won the grand prize at the Seoul Dementia Management Project Competition.
“Bright Organization” is a project aimed at preventing falls among dementia patients. By organizing unnecessary items, it creates a comfortable environment to help them live safely without tripping or falling.
Additionally, it provides support to caregivers who often lack the capacity to manage household chores while taking care of dementia patients.
The Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center launched this project in October to provide essential assistance to households with dementia patients. It organizes the main living spaces such as living rooms and kitchens for dementia patients residing in the district until the end of this year.
Broken or hazardous items are removed, and frequently used objects are placed in easily accessible locations. Furthermore, items containing memories of the dementia patients and their families are placed in visible spots to help trigger recollections.
As of December 7, 23 households have been assisted. Caregivers expressed their gratitude, saying, “I was unable to handle housework while caring for my parents, so I appreciate the help,” and “Thanks to finding forgotten items, I spent happy times reminiscing old memories with my mother.”
“Bright Organization” is part of the “Dazzling Project,” which was selected in the 2023 Ministry of Health and Welfare public contest. Other initiatives under this project include the “Bright Lecture Series” and “Grandmother’s Wardrobe,” which raise awareness about the preciousness of life for dementia patients’ families.
As a result of these efforts, the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center was selected as the top institution at the “2023 Dementia Management Project Competition” hosted by Seoul City on the 7th.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “I hope dementia patients and their families can feel affection for life and cherish happy memories,” adding, “We will promote various support measures to help prevent and manage dementia and alleviate the burden on caregivers.”
