Jeong Hyeong-sik, a candidate for Constitutional Court Justice (62), was born in Seoul and graduated from Seoul High School and Seoul National University School of Law and its graduate school.


After passing the 27th Judicial Examination in 1985, he completed the 17th Judicial Research and Training Institute course in 1988. In March of the same year, he began his career as a judge at the Seongnam Branch of Suwon District Court. He served as a judge at Seoul Family Court, Seoul Civil District Court, Jinju Branch of Changwon District Court, Seoul District Court, Eastern Branch of Seoul District Court, and Seongnam Branch of Suwon District Court.


Afterwards, he served as a judge at Seoul High Court, and as a judicial research officer at the Supreme Court, followed by serving as a chief judge at Cheongju District Court, Suwon District Court, and Seoul Administrative Court. In 2010, he held positions as the head of Pyeongtaek Branch of Suwon District Court, chief judge at Daejeon High Court, chief judge at Seoul High Court, and acting chief judge at Seoul Administrative Court.


From February 2019, he served as the president of Seoul Bankruptcy Court, and after serving as chief judge at Suwon High Court in February 2021, he moved to become the president of Daejeon High Court in February this year.


Jeong, who excels in legal principles, is well known within the judiciary as a criminal trial expert.


He worked as a criminal in-depth judicial research officer at the Supreme Court, and while serving as chief judge at Seoul High Court, he presided over the election-specialized trial division and the corruption-specialized trial division.


He is evaluated as having handled high-profile cases such as the Busan Savings Bank case, former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook case, and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong case with conviction, adhering to the presumption of innocence and evidence law. He is also known for his modest and approachable personality, earning strong respect from senior and junior judges and staff.


While serving as president of Seoul Bankruptcy Court, he established practical guidelines regarding the submission of materials by individual bankruptcy trustees and contributed to the development of judicial administration by expanding the New Start Counseling Center.


He was selected as an outstanding judge by the Seoul Bar Association in 2015.


On the 16th, President Yoon Seok-yeol nominated Chief Judge Jeong of Daejeon High Court as the successor candidate to former Constitutional Court Chief Justice Yoo Nam-seok.
