Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) will hold the 2nd regular performance of the Jongno-gu Royal Court Dance Troupe, "Muae Madang," at Changgyeonggung Palace on the 11th.
The "Jongno-gu Royal Court Dance Troupe" was established in 2022 to preserve and pass down royal court dances, as Jongno is the home of royal court arts with representative Joseon Dynasty palaces such as Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung located there.
To continue the tradition and provide local residents with a culturally rich life, the troupe actively performs special shows at the Jongno Hanbok Festival and operates royal court dance programs online.
Following the first performance held last October, the 2nd regular performance "Muae Madang" this year will include explanations for general citizens who may find royal court dance somewhat unfamiliar, as well as English interpretation for foreign tourists.
The performance is divided into Part 1, "Royal Court Dance with Commentary," and Part 2, "Royal Court Dance in the Yajinchan at Jagyeongjeon in the Year of the Metal Ox," featuring representative royal court dances such as Chun-aengjeon, Cheoyongmu, and Geomgimu, which embody elegant beauty.
Admission to the performance is free, but visitors must pay the entrance fee to Changgyeonggung Palace. For more details about the performance, please check the Jongno Cultural Foundation website.
Meanwhile, starting in October, Jongno-gu is operating the "Chun-aengjeon Open Class with Family" to increase residents' interest in traditional culture and royal court dance and to expand opportunities for cultural enjoyment. This effort reflects the artistic director Park Eun-young’s dedication to popularizing royal court dance, emphasizing that anyone can dance and become a part of the performance.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, "This is an excellent opportunity to experience and appreciate royal court dance, which embodies the dignity of Joseon royal culture, up close," and added, "We will continue to support and maintain interest so that citizens can enjoy and experience various traditional cultures filled with the wisdom and excellence of our ancestors."
