Growing Suspicion Whether It Is Fraud or a Namesake Case

Former national fencing athlete Nam Hyun-hee's remarriage partner, 'Jeon Cheong-jo, a chaebol third-generation 15 years younger,' who was revealed to be a woman rather than a man, has been exposed with allegations that she previously pretended to be a man and committed fraud. Questions are growing as to whether Mr. Nam was defrauded or if there is another Mr. Jeon involved.

On the 25th, entertainment media Dispatch reported that both the claims that Jeon Cheong-jo was an 'illegitimate child of a chaebol chairman' and that she was a 'former equestrian athlete' were false. They even stated that Jeon Cheong-jo's resident registration number starts with '2,' indicating she is a woman, and revealed that she has a criminal record for defrauding seven people out of money.

Earlier, Nam Hyun-hee announced her remarriage to Mr. Jeon just two months after her divorce on the 23rd. Mr. Jeon was known as a third-generation chaebol who learned equestrianism in New York, USA, and claimed to be a chaebol third-generation from the United States.

However, according to the court ruling disclosed by Dispatch, in April 2019, Jeon pretended to be a man to a victim and lied, saying, "My wife's older brother runs a water-related business in Seoul, and if you invest 3 million won, you will receive 5 billion won in profits after six months."

The court judged the fraud charge as guilty, stating, "At that time, the defendant (Jeon Cheong-jo) was a woman and had neither the intention nor the ability to return the money to the victim."

Additionally, two months later in June, Jeon pretended to be a man in Jeju Island and deceived a victim by claiming to be "an illegitimate child of a casino group chairman," extorting 72 million won. The court ruling explicitly states that Jeon is "not an illegitimate child of (the group) chairman."

In the same month, she also pretended to be in the United States and extorted 16 million won from another victim.

One year earlier, in 2018, Jeon approached a man she met through a dating app, claiming to be a 'horse trainer,' and swindled 57 million won. In 2017, she also attempted fraud but failed.

Jeon was sentenced to two years in prison in the first trial and two years and three months in the second trial for these fraudulent activities.

The court stated, "Jeon Cheong-jo deceived multiple victims and embezzled nearly 300 million won," and "the defendant failed to compensate most of the victims' damages."

YouTuber Lee Jin-ho also reported, "During the investigation, I received unexpected information from an acquaintance of Jeon. Jeon lived in Ganghwa-do and graduated from Ganghwa Girls' Middle School. According to this netizen, they exercised together, and until then, Jeon was a woman."

Meanwhile, as various suspicions arose about her, Jeon opened a new Instagram account and stated, "If false information or malicious or false posts about me are spread, I will respond strongly."

Mr. Nam also commented on the controversy surrounding Jeon on the 24th, saying, "It was naturally expected," and added, "I saw comments like 'the second Nancy Lang,' 'a fraud,' and 'not a man but a woman.' I'm fine. I don't mind because everyone will know the truth over time."

Victims deceived by Jeon Cheong-jo said, "Jeon speaks so convincingly," and "If you keep listening, it seems real, so you can't help but be deceived."
