Busan City Supports Acquisition of 'Busan Enterprise Safety Certification' Using Collaborative Robots

Busan Company STS Robotech, Utilizing Korea's Largest Collaborative Robots, Obtains Safety Certification

Diverse Corporate Support ... Strengthening Competitiveness of Busan Companies Using Robots and Revitalizing the Robot Industry

Busan City has taken steps to strengthen the competitiveness of Busan companies utilizing robots to revitalize the robot industry.

Through the ‘AI Robot Utilization Enterprise Competitiveness Advancement Project,’ Busan City supported Busan companies, which use collaborative robots on the largest scale in Korea, in obtaining ‘safety certification.’

Collaborative robots are robots that assist in efficiently performing tasks through direct interaction with humans.

In the challenging management conditions faced by small and medium-sized enterprises struggling with limited space and labor supply, collaborative robots are emerging as an attractive alternative that enables efficient space utilization and productivity improvement.

The safety certifications supported by the city this time include quantitative robot risk assessment, collaborative robot safety measures, and workplace safety for installation (ISO 10218-2).

Unlike conventional industrial robots that require safety fences and sensors, collaborative robots do not install safety fences and sensors to allow worker intervention, making safety certification essential to ensure worker safety.

The city closely conducted safety certification consulting for this company in cooperation with the ‘Korea Institute of Robot Convergence (Director Yeojun-gu),’ a specialized research institute for robot commercialization, the ‘Korea Robot Industry Promotion Agency (Director Son Woong-hee),’ responsible for robot safety certification, and the ‘Korea Robot Industry Association (Chairman Kang Cheol-ho).’

The company in question is ‘STS Robotech’ (CEO Kim Ki-hwan, located in Sasang-gu, Busan), a representative small and medium-sized enterprise utilizing robots that produces clean fitting parts for semiconductor equipment.

They operate the largest-scale robot collaborative machining automation process in Korea by linking domestically produced CNC machining equipment with domestic (Rainbow Robotics) collaborative robots.

The city has been promoting the ‘AI Robot Utilization Enterprise Competitiveness Advancement Project,’ supported by city funds in cooperation with related robot organizations, to encourage the use of collaborative robots and service robots.

As part of this effort, the city supports obtaining safety certification for robot services that prevent safety accidents and provide convenience in industrial sites and living environments, and this achievement is expected to become the first pilot case.

Lee Kyung-deok, Director of the Future Industry Bureau, stated, “The acquisition of safety certification by STS Robotech will be a good opportunity to improve awareness of the safety of collaborative robots and lower the entry barriers for installation.” He added, “Our city will continue to discover useful robot services in various fields such as manufacturing and services, and by supporting technology development, demonstration, safety certification, and commercialization of Busan companies, we will strengthen the competitiveness of Busan companies utilizing robots and revitalize the Busan robot industry.”
