Incheon Landing Operation Commemoration Event from 14th to 19th... International Event Planned for Next Year

This year, the 73rd anniversary commemorative event of the Incheon Landing Operation is being held on an unprecedented large scale from the 14th to the 19th, and the Incheon Metropolitan City has recreated the Incheon Landing Operation as metaverse content so that it can be experienced in a virtual world.

Incheon City, the first public institution in Korea to collaborate with the global metaverse and NFT gaming platform 'The Sandbox,' developed the Incheon Landing Operation metaverse content and released it on The Sandbox's official website starting from the 13th. Within the content, users can experience the site of the Incheon Landing Operation in a virtual world, interact with historical figures, and enjoy various mini-games.

Incheon City plans to produce places and items within the Incheon Landing Operation content as limited edition NFT collections and donate all proceeds from sales to Korean War veterans both domestically and abroad. Additionally, Incheon City will hold an event where purchasers of the Incheon Landing Operation NFT collection will be entered into a draw to win prizes such as accommodation vouchers at luxury hotels in Incheon, travel vouchers for Incheon islands, and 24-hour Incheon Tour Passes.

An official from Incheon City stated, "The Incheon Landing Operation metaverse content was prepared to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice and to honor the veterans who protected the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea." He added, "We hope that the Incheon Landing Operation content will be remembered as content that allows many people to experience and empathize with the events of the past, beyond just a record of history."

Meanwhile, Incheon City plans to significantly expand the period, scale, and budget of this year’s 73rd anniversary commemorative event of the Incheon Landing Operation to re-examine its historical value and lay the foundation to expand Incheon as a stage for peace diplomacy.

The budget for the commemorative project, which was previously around 200 million KRW, has been increased to 2.7 billion KRW. During the six-day event period, various citizen participation events will be held, including a maritime victory ceremony and a reenactment of the joint landing operation in the waters off Incheon, street parades, special cinema screenings, and peace cultural performances.

Incheon City plans to elevate the event next year to a large-scale international event comparable to the Normandy Landing Operation commemorations by inviting heads of state from the eight countries that participated in the Incheon Landing Operation. Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok announced last November, after visiting the Normandy Landing Operation site, that the historical significance and importance of the Incheon Landing Operation are comparable to those of the Normandy Landing Operation and that the event will be developed into an international event next year.

Operation Chromite, the codename for the Incheon Landing Operation carried out by UN forces on September 15, 1950, was a large-scale amphibious assault force consisting of 75,000 ground troops and 261 ships that recaptured Incheon and laid the groundwork for the recapture of Seoul, turning the tide of the Korean War.
