The American music magazine Rolling Stone selected Girls' Generation's "Gee" as the number one song among the "100 Greatest K-pop Songs of All Time."
On the 20th (local time), Rolling Stone explained the reason for choosing "Gee" as number one, stating, "It shows how the ecstasy of an indescribable love can be translated through popular music."
Girls' Generation also made the list at number 33 with their debut song "Into the New World," which Rolling Stone praised, saying, "During the late 2000s and early 2010s, a crucial period when K-pop gained global popularity, they opened the door to the narrative of girl groups."
Following "Gee," H.O.T.'s representative song "Candy," IU's "Good Day," and BTS's "Spring Day" ranked second to fourth, respectively.
Notably, Jo Yong-pil, the "King of Songs," secured the fifth spot on the chart with "Short Hair" from his first album, surpassing fierce K-pop idol groups.
Rolling Stone highly praised this song, calling it "the revolutionary power of K-pop that freed listeners from the melancholy of the trot pentatonic scale."
Additionally, BLACKPINK's "DDU-DU DDU-DU," BIGBANG's "Haru Haru," 2NE1's "I Am the Best," Seo Taiji and Boys' debut song "I Know," which is credited with changing the landscape of Korean popular music, and Wonder Girls' mega-hit "Tell Me" followed, ranking sixth to tenth.
SM Entertainment had the most songs on the list from a single agency, placing 14 songs including "Gee," "Candy," as well as tracks by S.E.S., BoA, and TVXQ.
