The Korea Forest Service has designated Kookmin University as a specialized graduate school for carbon sinks.
According to the Korea Forest Service on the 7th, a specialized graduate school for carbon sinks is designated to establish educational programs that utilize forests to respond to climate change and carbon neutrality, and to train professionals such as master's and doctoral students.
Prior to Kookmin University, the Korea Forest Service designated Korea University as a specialized graduate school for carbon sinks in 2021 and has been operating it.
This year, Kookmin University was added, and an annual project fund of 300 million KRW per university (more than double the previous year) will be provided. The project fund is expected to be supported for five years.
As a result of the designation, Kookmin University will offer more than 10 courses related to climate change and the maintenance and enhancement of carbon sinks, conduct international joint research on forest carbon sinks, and train experts in forest carbon measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) research.
Jeon Deok-ha, Director of Forest Policy at the Korea Forest Service, said, “South Korea has set a goal for forests to account for 11% of the national greenhouse gas reduction target by 2030. The Korea Forest Service will continue to provide support and expand projects to nurture outstanding talents who will lead the future of the forest sector.”
