"Bathing the Beach Too"... S-OIL Adopts Ulju Mokdo as a 'Companion Beach'

Beach Adoption Project Cultivated Like Pets

169 Companies Participate in 112 Locations Nationwide, First Time in Ulsan

Adopting a beach that isn’t even a pet?

A company in Ulsan is drawing attention by ‘adopting’ a ‘companion beach’ and putting effort into ‘bathing’ it through cleaning and environmental restoration activities.

S-OIL announced on the 22nd that it adopted the beach around Mokdo in Onsan-eup, Ulju-gun, and carried out volunteer activities by its employees to preserve the nearby marine ecosystem.

This campaign is a beach adoption program organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, aiming for marine litter collection and landscape improvement, where companies or organizations adopt a specific beach and take care of it like a pet.

First introduced domestically in 2020, currently 169 companies and organizations participate in the program covering 112 beaches nationwide. Although efforts are being made to improve the marine environment, no companies or organizations in the Ulsan area have participated in the companion beach program until now.

S-OIL plans to participate in the ‘companion beach’ program for the first time in the Ulsan area to protect Mokdo, Natural Monument No. 65, and improve the marine environment around Mokdo, conducting beach cleanup activities more than five times a year.

About 60 S-OIL employees collected coastal waste such as discarded plastics, nets, and abandoned fishing gear on the Mokdo beach and nearby coastal roads, while also running a campaign encouraging people to take their trash home.

An S-OIL official who participated in the event said, “We are glad to contribute to keeping the beach, which the company should nurture like bathing a dog, clean,” adding, “We will fulfill our social responsibility by broadly implementing ESG management activities along with environmental protection efforts.”

S-OIL is also working with marine-related organizations in Ulsan, such as the Ulsan Coast Guard and the Ulsan branch of the Korea Marine Rescue Association, conducting underwater waste and sediment collection projects at Ulsan ports and harbors, striving to ensure that Ulsan citizens and fishermen can live in a clean sea environment.
