Clinic A is suspected of overprescribing appetite suppressants (diethylpropion), which are among the diet drugs prescribed. Under the Narcotics Control Act, diethylpropion is classified as a psychotropic drug regulated to prevent abuse.

The police stated that the investigation began following a request from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). In January, the MFDS identified hospitals and clinics suspected of medical narcotics abuse and referred the cases to the National Police Agency for investigation.

Clinic A is known online as one of the "three major pilgrimage sites for dieting." Even before opening early in the morning, a long queue of people waiting to visit forms in front of Clinic A.
