Preventing Typhoon Damage to Farms... Government Conducts Summer Disaster Prevention Inspections

Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Conducts Pre-Inspection of Vulnerable Facilities
24-Hour Situation Management Starting in June

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 2nd that it will begin full-scale pre-inspections of vulnerable facilities in various sectors to prevent summer disasters such as typhoons, heavy rains, and heatwaves.

This is to prepare for the increasing damage caused by summer monsoons, typhoons, and heatwaves due to recent factors such as climate change. Last year alone, damage recovery costs amounted to 186.3 billion won due to heavy rains and typhoons (Hinnamnor).

An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs stated, "Pre-inspections of vulnerable facilities will be conducted by late June, before the start of the monsoon season," adding, "From the monsoon season onward, a 24-hour situation management system will be maintained centered on the Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures Situation Room, coordinating among agencies, and emergency recovery and technical support will be promoted in case of damage."

From the 2nd until the end of June, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Rural Development Administration, and related agencies have designated this period as a focused preemptive management period to carry out repairs and reinforcements on vulnerable facilities. They will mainly inspect and supplement water control facilities, horticultural facilities, livestock facilities, livestock burial sites, landslide-prone areas, and mountain solar power installations to prepare for risk factors.

From June to October 15th, the summer disaster countermeasures situation room will coordinate with the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, local governments, the Rural Development Administration, the Korea Forest Service, the Korea Rural Community Corporation, NongHyup, and other agricultural disaster response agencies to manage situations 24 hours a day. In case of damage, recovery personnel will be supported in cooperation with the Ministry of National Defense, NongHyup, and others, and disaster relief funds and management funds will be promptly provided to affected farms for disaster recovery costs.

Kwon Jae-han, Director of the Agricultural Innovation Policy Office at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, urged, "To minimize damage to agricultural facilities and crops, farmers should thoroughly conduct pre-inspections such as drainage maintenance and securing facilities like livestock barns and greenhouses. Local governments, the Rural Development Administration, the Korea Forest Service, the Korea Rural Community Corporation, NongHyup, and other agencies should also inspect disaster-prone areas during the summer and promptly repair and reinforce facilities that need supplementation."
