National Symphony Performs Tchaikovsky Ballet Suite

May 4th at Yesul-ui Jeondang

The National Symphony Orchestra will perform "Tchaikovsky Ballet Suites," featuring Tchaikovsky's ballet music such as "The Nutcracker" and "Sleeping Beauty," at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on the 4th of next month.

Tchaikovsky drew inspiration from literary masterpieces such as Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," Ernst Hoffmann's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," and Charles Perrault's "Sleeping Beauty," leaving behind beautiful symphonic poems and ballet music.

On this day, the National Symphony will perform Tchaikovsky's fantasy overture "Romeo and Juliet," followed by two of Tchaikovsky's three major ballets: "The Nutcracker Suite No. 1" and "Sleeping Beauty Suite."

"The Nutcracker Suite No. 1" consists of eight pieces: "Miniature Overture," "March," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," "Trepak," "Arabian Dance," "Chinese Dance," "Dance of the Reed Flutes," and "Waltz of the Flowers." Among these, the "Waltz of the Flowers" is considered the representative music of The Nutcracker, and the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is famous for showcasing the charm of the celesta, a keyboard instrument.

The "Sleeping Beauty Suite" is a selection of five pieces from the ballet "Sleeping Beauty." It includes "Introduction: The Spirit of the Lira," "Pas d’action. Adagio," "Puss in Boots," "Panorama," and "Waltz."

Alongside Tchaikovsky's music, the National Symphony Orchestra will premiere Danny Elfman's "Cello Concerto" in Korea. Danny Elfman is a composer regarded as one of Hollywood's "Big Three" music masters alongside Hans Zimmer and John Williams. Elfman has composed music for over 100 films and has been nominated for the Oscars four times for "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," "Good Will Hunting," "Big Fish," and "Men in Black." He composes one classical piece annually and has released works such as a "Violin Concerto" and a "Percussion Quartet."

Elfman's Cello Concerto had its world premiere last March in Vienna, Austria, performed by Gautier Capu?on, a cellist representing France. Capu?on will also perform at the Korean premiere stage.
