Gyeongbuk Province is working hard to welcome travelers by introducing a variety of local festivals, diverse experiences, and family-friendly tourist destinations in celebration of May, the month of family.
In May, a rich and colorful array of festivals is prepared under the warm spring sunshine.
Starting with the Mungyeong Teapot Festival that began last weekend, the Andong Folk Festival and Yecheon Archery Festival will be held on the 4th, followed by the Yeongju Korean Seonbi Culture Festival, a Gyeongbuk-designated festival, on the 5th.
This year, Andong City will transform the 50th Andong Folk Festival into the ‘Chajeon General Noguk Princess Festival,’ showcasing traditional content differentiated from other regions through Andong’s representative folk games, Chajeon Nori and Noddari Balgi.
From the 11th, the Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival, a provincial-designated festival, will take place, followed by the Seongju Melon & Life Culture Festival on the 18th.
Additionally, on the 26th, the Pohang International Fireworks Festival, designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will begin, and on the 27th, the Yeongju Sobaeksan Azalea Festival awaits visitors.
In particular, Gyeongbuk Province will operate a hot air balloon experience event in conjunction with the Yeongju Sobaeksan Azalea Festival. Visitors to the festival can enjoy a special hot air balloon experience at the Yeongju Seocheon Riverside on May 27th and 28th.
When visiting Gyeongbuk, families and friends can enjoy a variety of sights and experiences. Exhibitions and educational travel destinations suitable for children, meditation experiences, and activities provide tourism courses that span generations.

May is also perfect for camping. By the end of last year, the camping population in Korea exceeded 7 million, and with the normalization of non-face-to-face lifestyles after COVID-19, demand for camping tourism has surged sharply.
There are 415 campgrounds in Gyeongbuk, and on weekends, popular campsites are extremely difficult to book. Gyeongbuk, blessed with rivers, mountains, and seas, is ideal for enjoying fire gazing, forest gazing, and water gazing surrounded by pristine natural environments.
Recommended representative camping spots in Gyeongbuk include Gyeongju Oryu Camping Site, embraced by the pine forest of Oryu Beach, and Yeongdeok Goraebul National Camping Site, known for its long 20-ri white sandy beach and outstanding sea views.
Other popular sites among campers include Sangju Bo Auto Camping Site, great for enjoying water gazing while engaging in Nakdong River water sports, and Bonghwa Cheongoksan Camping Site, perfect for forest gazing in the woods.
Kim Sang-cheol, Director of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Culture, Tourism and Sports, said, “This year, the rapid increase in tourism demand after the COVID-19 endemic is palpable. In celebration of May, the month of family, we hope families and friends will visit Gyeongbuk, where they can enjoy style, taste, and fun, and create many unforgettable memories.”
He added, “Going forward, Gyeongbuk Province will continue to make efforts to discover diverse tourism content and support travel convenience so that visitors can enjoy tourism in Gyeongbuk without any inconvenience.”
Gyeongbuk Province expects a full recovery of the tourism industry for the first time in three years since COVID-19. As of the end of March this year, the number of tourists (based on 342 major tourist spots) reached 8.61 million, a 32% increase compared to the same period last year, and domestic tourism expenditure in the province (based on BC and Shinhan Card big data) was 293.2 billion KRW, a 21% increase compared to the same period last year.
