On the afternoon of the 30th, Mark Brown, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, along with his delegation visiting Korea, will visit Busan.

The Cook Islands is a South Pacific island nation located between New Zealand and Hawaii, adopting a parliamentary cabinet system as its form of government. It consists of 15 islands with a total area of 240㎢, and is known to have a population of about 10,000 residents.

Korea and the Cook Islands have maintained diplomatic relations for the past 10 years since establishing ties in 2013. Prime Minister Mark Brown also visited Korea last September to attend the Global Climate Fund (GCF) ministerial meeting.

Mark Brown led the delegation visiting Korea, arriving on the 29th ahead of attending the 56th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) held in Incheon from the 2nd to the 5th, and will visit Busan on the 30th, the day after his arrival.

Mark Brown has served as a policy advisor to the Prime Minister's Office of the Cook Islands and Deputy Minister of Agriculture since 1991, and has also held positions such as Vice Chairman of the Cook Islands Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed Prime Minister of the Cook Islands in September 2020.

On the day, Prime Minister Mark Brown and his delegation will have a welcome luncheon in Haeundae, followed by a tour of major city attractions including Bukhang.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun will personally preside over the welcome luncheon, introducing the diverse charms of Busan to the Cook Islands Prime Minister and his delegation, and discussing practical cooperation plans in areas where Busan and the Cook Islands can collaborate in the future, such as Korea-Pacific island country development cooperation, joint response to the climate crisis, tourism, and maritime sectors.

After the luncheon, the delegation will move to the Busan X the Sky observatory to experience a panoramic view of Busan including Haeundae Beach, and then visit F1963 to directly experience the site where a former wire factory was reborn as a complex cultural space.

Subsequently, they will visit the ‘Bukhang Redevelopment’ site, which will lead Busan’s century-long future, listen to the city’s explanation on the progress of the project, and conclude their Busan schedule.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “As the government is strengthening cooperative relations with Pacific island countries through events such as the Korea-Pacific Island Countries Summit, the global maritime city of Busan will also deepen its cooperation with Pacific island nations in areas such as efficient management of marine resources and sustainable growth, taking this visit by the Cook Islands Prime Minister as an opportunity.”
