A Tourist Attraction with a Yun Dong-ju Theme to Be Created in Gwangyang Seomjingang Area

Selected as the '2023 Jeonnam-type Regional Growth Strategic Project'

Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 27th that ‘Yun Dong-ju's Starlight Island Shining in the Seomjin River’ was selected in the 2023 Jeonnam-type Regional Growth Strategic Project contest.


The ‘Jeonnam-type Regional Growth Strategic Project’ is a large-scale project independently supported by Jeollanam-do to strengthen the region's autonomous development capabilities by selecting strategic projects tailored to the characteristics of the region to secure future growth engines for Jeonnam.

The city applied for this contest and was finally selected after comprehensively evaluating the necessity of the project, plan feasibility, sustainability, and other factors through the first written screening and the second presentation screening.


The selected project, ‘Yun Dong-ju's Starlight Island Shining in the Seomjin River,’ will invest a total project cost of 13 billion KRW, including 5 billion KRW from the provincial government, by 2027 in the areas of Baealdo and Mangdeok Port to create ▲ Dongju’s Starlight Garden ▲ Mangdeok Port street specialization maintenance ▲ Yun Dong-ju & Jeong Byeong-wook Literature Museum ▲ Starlight Road Art Market, among others.


The city plans to diversify and expand tourism infrastructure by investing 161.7 billion KRW by 2027 in about 10 projects in the Seomjin River area, including ▲ Seomjin River Yeonghonam complex transfer park creation ▲ Jinwol~Gwangyeong local road expansion construction ▲ (tentative name) Jeonnam Training Center for Small and Medium Venture Businesses ▲ Artcation tourism stay ▲ Baealdo Park camping mecca creation project.


Jung In-hwa, mayor of Gwangyang, said, “The selected project ‘Yun Dong-ju's Starlight Island Shining in the Seomjin River’ will create great synergy by linking with the projects planned in the Seomjin River area, serving as an opportunity to further enhance the local brand.” He added, “We will develop it into a healing tourism destination where tourists visiting Gwangyang can stay and experience.”
