Professor Byeon Bong-gyu of Hannam University Awarded the 'Songjeong Entomology Award'

Hannam University announced on the 28th that Professor Byun Bong-gyu (photo) from the Department of Life Systems recently received the '12th Song Jeong Insectology Award.'

According to the university, the Song Jeong Insectology Award is given biennially to mid-career entomologists based on a comprehensive evaluation of their research achievements in the field of insects, as well as their social service and contributions through insect research.


Professor Byun was recognized for his excellent research achievements and his service as an advisory member for various national research institutions and related fields, contributing to the development of entomology in Korea.


Having studied insect taxonomy, Professor Byun has focused on identifying the diversity and distribution of insects in domestic forests and natural ecosystems, and on preparing basic data that can be applied and utilized in various applied fields.


During his research, Professor Byun has discovered over 50 new insect species and was the first to identify more than 300 species previously unrecorded in Korea, registering these findings in the academic community.


In particular, he has published over 250 papers in domestic and international journals in the field of entomology and presented more than 320 academic papers at domestic and international conferences, thereby enhancing the status of Korean entomology.


Currently, Professor Byun is also dedicated to nurturing future scholars in the field of entomology at Hannam University.


Meanwhile, the Korean Society of Applied Entomology, established in 1962 as the Korean Society of Plant Protection and renamed in 1988, is considered the largest academic society in the field of entomology in Korea.
