It is golf season. The weather is neither too cold nor too hot. It is perfect for showing off the golf skills honed during the off-season. It is also the time when golf beginners, called "golini" (golf + children), appear on the field. As their skills are lacking, unstable swings are inevitable. However, bad etiquette is unforgivable. Beginner golfers often fail to properly manage the course. These are common mistakes made during rounds.
When you make a high-trajectory shot that lands on the green, ball marks are created. If not repaired, other players’ putting can be affected. Repairing ball marks is basic etiquette. The best way is to dig out the depressed part of the ball mark and then repair it. However, weekend golfers often find this difficult. They repair the mark without removing the depressed part. The repair tool is placed close to the edge of the pitch mark at a 60-degree angle. The grass on the outer edge is gently pushed into the pitch mark. This process is repeated in a circular motion around the ball mark. Finally, the surface is smoothed by pressing down with the bottom of the putter.
Fairway divots are another matter. They represent the minimum effort to maintain the best course conditions. The turf piece that has been displaced from the divot is placed back in its original position. Then, stepping on it helps the roots take hold quickly. Sometimes, the divot breaks into pieces. In this case, sand is used to fill the area. It should neither overflow nor be insufficient. Sand is added until it is level with the surrounding grass, then compacted by stepping on it.
Raking the bunker is also fundamental. It must be restored to its original state. Use a rake to gently smooth the sand. When exiting the bunker, use the side with the gentlest slope. Choosing a steep side can damage the bunker. After leaving the bunker, use your club to brush off any sand stuck to your shoes.
Driving the cart requires caution as well. Follow the signs on the course. Always obey warning notices. Avoid areas marked with stakes or ropes. Drive at a moderate speed. Be careful around sharp turns, wet grass, and the edges of bunkers. Suddenly turning the cart’s steering wheel can damage the grass. Safe driving is paramount.
