National Pukyong National University will be able to increase its university quota by 38 students next year due to the establishment of new departments in advanced fields such as semiconductors.
Pukyong National University confirmed an increase of 38 students (net increase) in the 2024 academic year general university advanced field quota allocation announced by the Ministry of Education on the 27th. This is the largest number in Busan.
The Ministry of Education announced on the same day that it will increase the advanced field quotas by a total of 1,829 students, including 1,012 students for non-metropolitan universities and 817 students for metropolitan universities, to nurture talent in advanced fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
To cultivate talent in advanced fields, Pukyong National University will establish three new departments next year: the Department of Nano Convergence Semiconductor Engineering, the Department of Digital Finance, and the Department of Smart Mobility Engineering. Including the net increase quota for these newly established departments and internal adjustments, a total of 139 freshmen will be recruited.
With the establishment of new advanced field departments and the increase in quotas, Pukyong National University expects to gain momentum in nurturing convergence talent for the development of regional strategic industries by utilizing close cooperation systems with local governments and regional industries based on the university’s specialization capabilities.
The Department of Nano Convergence Semiconductor Engineering plans to design a curriculum that combines next-generation semiconductors and nanotechnology based on the demand for new industries in the southeastern region to enhance the competitiveness of national and regional advanced industries. A cooperative system has also been established with Bitouji, a semiconductor specialized company, to cultivate field-oriented talent.
The Department of Digital Finance will nurture fintech specialists based on Busan’s innovative efforts to become a digital finance hub. Pukyong National University plans to jointly operate this department with Dongseo University to maximize students’ advanced technology capabilities.
Additionally, the Department of Smart Mobility Engineering will cultivate talent capable of responding to the next-generation mobility industry, including intelligent ships, intelligent robots, and intelligent drones, and will lead the cultivation of specialized talent in the smart mobility field focused on water and marine sectors based on regional community demand.
Pukyong National University was recently selected for a 53 billion KRW Campus Innovation Park project to create an urban advanced industrial complex on campus. Following this, with the confirmation of the advanced field quota increase, the university plans to create synergy effects in the selection and promotion of government and Busan city future industry projects such as the ‘Regional Semiconductor Joint Research Institute,’ ‘Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project,’ and ‘Startup Education Innovation Leading University Project (SCOUT).’
