A man in his 50s who was bivouacking was mistaken for a wild boar and shot dead with a hunting rifle.
According to Uiseong Police Station in Gyeongbuk on the 28th, at around 8 p.m. on the 24th of last month, Mr. A (59), who was bivouacking (Biwak, camping or temporarily staying outdoors without a tent) covered with white vinyl near a park at the boundary between Sagok-myeon and Oksan-myeon, was shot by Mr. B (61), a professional hunter specializing in harmful wildlife.
Mr. B, who was hunting wild boars, mistook Mr. A for an animal because he appeared elongated horizontally on the infrared camera, according to the investigation.
Right after firing the bullet, when no sound was heard, Mr. B thought he had missed the wild boar and moved to another location, the police understood.
The report of Mr. A’s death was filed with the police by a civilian at around 5 p.m. on the 28th, four days later. It was reported that Mr. A was traveling nationwide by bicycle while bivouacking when this accident occurred.
The police found a bullet in Mr. A’s body and arrested Mr. B after analyzing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. The police confiscated Mr. B’s hunting license and firearms and booked him without detention on charges of negligent homicide.
A police official said, “Forensic analysis of Mr. B’s mobile phone showed that although he fired the gun, he thought the wild boar had escaped and was unaware that the victim had died,” adding, “There appears to be no evidence of corpse concealment.”
