Gachon University will increase its enrollment by 150 students in advanced fields, making it the second highest among universities in the Seoul metropolitan area after Seoul National University. The total net increase in the metropolitan area is 817 students across 19 departments (majors) at 10 universities, with the 150 additional students accounting for 18.4% of the total net increase.
The increased enrollment includes ▲50 students in the Biologics Department in the innovative new drug field ▲50 students in the Finance and Big Data Department in the SW and telecommunications field ▲50 students in the Chemical Engineering, Life Science, and Battery Engineering Department in the energy and new materials field. The increased quotas will be applied starting from this year's early admission and will enroll as freshmen in the 2024 academic year.
The total admission quota for universities in the metropolitan area has been regulated to limit new student increases due to concerns about overcrowding and opposition from local regions.
However, recently, the Ministry of Education lifted regulations to allow an increase in enrollment quotas for advanced departments regardless of metropolitan or local distinctions, in order to supply talent to core national industries such as semiconductors, resulting in this net increase.
This is the first time in 24 years since 2000 that the admission quota for metropolitan universities has increased.
Lee Gil-yeo, President of Gachon University, stated, "The establishment of departments in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and batteries to nurture future core talents in advanced industries, and Gachon University's leading efforts and passion in education and research, have been proven." He added, "We will strengthen interdisciplinary convergence to contribute to talent development in advanced fields and industrial advancement."
