On the same day, the National Police Agency held the 'Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit Launch Ceremony' at the National Police Agency auditorium in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, to mark the enforcement of the Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit Act.

The Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit consists of over 4,000 organizations nationwide, with a total membership of about 90,000. It is a volunteer organization that voluntarily engages in crime prevention activities. Unlike the Volunteer Fire Brigade, it previously had no legal basis, but with the enforcement of the Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit Act, it has been newly organized as a legally based entity.

The Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit has established its status as a statutory organization whose activities and support are guaranteed by law, and members belonging to the unit will perform the role of quasi-law enforcement assistants responsible for local safety alongside the police. Responsibilities such as election neutrality and prohibition of profit-making activities apply.

Heo Seung-kyo, Chief of the Autonomous Crime Prevention Union, who attended the ceremony, said, "With the enactment of the Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit Act, I feel pride and fulfillment as the contributions of the Autonomous Crime Prevention Unit to local safety have been recognized," and added, "Since a legal basis has now been established for activities and support, we expect the organization’s activities to become more active in the future."
