On the 25th, the agency announced on the 26th that it held the 'On-site Communication Meeting with Semiconductor Fabless Companies in the Province' at the Gyeonggi R&DB Center's main conference room, chaired by Kang Seong-cheon, the director of the agency.
The meeting was organized to listen to the on-site opinions of domestic fabless companies regarding the recently announced 'Yongin System Semiconductor Cluster Establishment' by the government and to discuss ways to revitalize the fabless ecosystem.
Director Kang Seong-cheon stated, "Since the heyday of semiconductor fabless companies in the 2000s, fabless companies have been relatively neglected due to semiconductor promotion policies focused on large corporations. However, as discussions on fostering the fabless industry have become active recently, it is necessary to discover and propose various policies to nurture domestic fabless companies using this momentum. The agency will do its best to ensure that industrial policies and corporate support measures reflecting on-site demands are implemented."
In response, Lee Seo-gyu, chairman of the Korea Fabless Industry Association (CEO of PixelPlus), said, "So far, government support for semiconductors has been centered on large corporations' memory semiconductors, but with the establishment of the Yongin System Semiconductor Cluster, government-level interest in the fabless sector has increased, which is encouraging. We hope that workforce development and R&D planning needed by fabless companies will be intensively addressed in Gyeonggi-do going forward."
Meanwhile, since the end of March, the agency has been conducting nine rounds of communication meetings over a month with companies from various fields such as export, textiles, furniture, bio, and venture startups to facilitate on-site communication and policy discovery.
