Dong-A University professor Jongwook Kim from the Department of Electronic Engineering (also affiliated with the Department of Interdisciplinary Science) received the Presidential Citation for his contributions to the promotion of science, technology, and information and communication.
Professor Kim was selected as the recipient of the Presidential Citation in the "Information and Communication Development" category at the "2023 Science and Information and Communication Day Ceremony," held in celebration of the 56th Science Day and the 68th Information and Communication Day.
He has published a total of 45 SCI-level papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, optimization algorithms, and AI ethics, and since 2016, he has been the first in Korea to conduct AI robot ethics projects, developing AI ethics agents.
In 2018, he led the revision of the "Robot Ethics Guidelines" commissioned by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and since 2020, he has worked on developing ethical standards for educational robots, eldercare robots, and delivery robots, founded the Robot Ethics Research Society of the Korean Robotics Society, and established the Dong-A University AI Robot Ethics Technology Center, striving to pioneer research and promote the dissemination of AI ethics.
Additionally, since 2022, he has been a member of the AI Ethics subcommittee of the National AI Ethics Policy Forum (hosted by KISDI), actively participating in the creation of ethical checklists for AI developers and companies, providing consulting to businesses and institutions, and co-preparing the world-renowned AI robot ethics society ICRES, engaging in domestic and international activities in the field of AI ethics.
Professor Kim stated, “At a time when AI technology is rapidly advancing and AI systems like ChatGPT, which are like polymath experts, have emerged, the importance of AI ethics in making AI a safe and trustworthy technology is growing even more.”
He added, “Having received such a generous award, I will continue to collaborate with experts from various fields and nurture future generations so that AI can contribute to a peaceful and happy life for humanity.”
