The meeting was attended by Mayor Yoon Byung-tae, Deputy Mayor Kang Young-gu, senior officials, National Assembly member Shin Jeong-hoon, City Council Chairman Lee Sang-man, provincial and city council members, and about 40 party officials from the regional committee.
The city requested cooperation on major current projects including attracting the ‘Ultra-High Power Laser Research Facility,’ the ‘Artificial Sun Research Facility,’ preparation for the ‘Second Relocation of Public Institutions,’ resolving issues related to the ‘Naju SRF Combined Heat and Power Plant,’ enacting laws for ‘Agricultural Solar Power,’ and establishing new elementary and middle schools in the Innovation City.
They also discussed plans for the ‘Kentech-linked Energy Cluster Development,’ connecting the disconnected section of the Yeongsan River Riverside Trail between Seungchonbo and Naju Bridge, easing and lifting restrictions in development-restricted zones, and responses to the separation of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute.
For next year’s national and provincial funding proposals, eight projects focused on discovering and fostering future growth industries such as new energy industries, tourism, and food tech were proposed.
With a total scale of 9.1 billion KRW, the projects include ‘Support for attracting companies related to public institutions,’ ‘Construction of the National Energy Specialized Science Museum,’ ‘Establishment of the Next-Generation Grid Semiconductor-Based SST Demonstration Center,’ ‘Hydrogen Energy Network Construction Project,’ ‘Southern Region Wide-Area Tourism Development Project,’ ‘Promotion of the Gwangju-Naju Wide-Area Railway,’ ‘Food Upcycling Industrialization,’ and ‘Operation of the Dalbit Children’s Hospital.’
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, “The advancement of pressing issues such as the second relocation of public institutions and attracting the ultra-high power laser research facility will be a very important milestone not only for Naju but also for Gwangju, Jeonnam, and the development of the Republic of Korea,” adding, “It is very important to have active support and cooperation from the party and government so that Naju can serve as a torchbearer for regional balanced development in the era of local extinction.”
National Assembly member Shin Jeong-hoon stated, “While a healthy tension between the party and government is necessary, there must be a shared recognition of unity in heart, will, and direction,” and added, “Let us take pride in the fact that there is no other local city in Korea as dynamic as Naju and work together between the party and government to realize a city that proactively responds to local extinction.”
