Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 25th that it will produce clean hydrogen using biogas obtained from wastewater treatment plant waste.
The day before, the company held a “Business Agreement Ceremony for the Establishment of Clean Hydrogen Production Facilities Using Biogas and Activation of the Hydrogen Ecosystem” at Cheongju City Hall in Chungbuk, attended by key officials including Seokanghyun, Head of Hyundai Motor’s Planning and Finance Division, Lee Beomseok, Mayor of Cheongju, and Kim Jingyun, Director of the High Technology Research Institute.
Hyundai Motor plans to build a facility on the site of Cheongju City’s public wastewater treatment plant that can produce 500 kg of clean hydrogen per day from biogas derived from organic waste by 2024. The goal is to increase daily production to 1,000 kg by 2027.
A hydrogen refueling station will be installed nearby to supply clean hydrogen to local residents at a reasonable price. In the future, the hydrogen will also be supplied to public-purpose vehicles such as hydrogen buses and cleaning trucks.
A Hyundai Motor official stated, “Starting with this agreement, we intend to actively develop a resource-circulating eco-friendly hydrogen business,” adding, “We will continue to promote the establishment of clean hydrogen production facilities domestically and develop overseas business models to secure global hydrogen ecosystem leadership.”
