The Naju City Council in Jeollanam-do (Chairman Lee Sang-man) announced on the 24th that it held the 1st plenary session of the 251st Naju City Council (extraordinary session) and unanimously adopted the "Resolution Strongly Condemning the Discharge of Contaminated Water from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant into the Ocean."
The resolution includes calls for "the Japanese government to immediately halt its plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean and to reconsider it from the ground up," and "the Japanese government to disclose original data related to the Fukushima contaminated water and to allow neighboring countries to directly participate in safety verification, demonstrating a sincere attitude toward the Fukushima contaminated water issue."
In particular, it urged the Yoon Seok-yeol administration to do its utmost to protect the health and safety of the people through active response and demands regarding the Fukushima contaminated water.
Park So-jun, the council member who spearheaded the resolution, said, "Although the Japanese government claims to respond sincerely and transparently to the Fukushima contaminated water discharge issue, there is a high concern that the Fukushima contaminated water, unlike normal contaminated water, contains a mixture of 64 types of radioactive substances including cesium and uranium, in addition to tritium."
He added, "What is more concerning is that the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is showing a lukewarm attitude toward the discharge issue, which directly affects public health and adversely impacts the fishing economy."
The Naju City Council plans to deliver the adopted petition to the President, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the heads of basic local governments and chairpersons of basic councils in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do.
