The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief Kim Su-hwan) has recently urged special caution as safety accidents related to fruit tree pruning have been occurring frequently.
According to the Jeju Fire Headquarters on the 24th, there have been 40 pruning-related safety accidents from the first day of this year until the 15th, a significant increase (25%↑) compared to 32 cases during the same period last year.
By equipment used, electric shears accounted for 14 cases, pruning shears for 12 cases, and shredders for 11 cases. By region, 85% (34 cases) of all accidents occurred in eup and myeon areas.
Due to the characteristics of the Jeju region, many safety accidents occur during spring pruning of citrus trees. In particular, shredders pose a high risk of leading to serious accidents, requiring special caution.
During pruning work, avoid loose gloves or work clothes and always wear gloves and work sleeves that fit your hands properly.
Precautions when operating shredders include ▲care when loading and unloading the shredder ▲caution when approaching the shredder’s input opening ▲using an auxiliary stick for feeding materials.
The Jeju Fire Headquarters is conducting awareness-raising and accident prevention campaigns to promote vigilance and compliance with safety rules during pruning work such as thinning citrus trees, and is fully committed to establishing a rapid response system in case of emergencies.
Kim Seung-yong, head of the 119 Comprehensive Situation Room, said, “While work has become easier with the recent spread of electric shears, safety accidents are on the rise. The best prevention is to exercise special caution and strictly follow safety rules.”
