55 Deaths at Construction Sites in Q1... LH-Commissioned Sites Highest with 3 Cases

The number of construction accident fatalities in the first quarter (January to March) of this year was 55. Among the top 100 construction companies, 7 deaths occurred on their sites.


On the 24th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport analyzed statistics from the Construction Safety Management Integrated Information Network (CSI) and released the list of construction accident fatalities for the first quarter of 2023 containing this information.

First, the number of deaths in private construction projects was recorded as 41. The permitting authorities with the highest number of fatalities were the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and Cheonan City in Chungnam Province, each with 3 deaths.


Among these, 7 companies from the top 100 construction firms (Lotte Construction, Seohee Construction, Junghung Construction, Daebo Construction, Dongdo ENG, Daewon, Yojin Construction Industry, etc.) each had one fatality. This is a 50% decrease compared to the same period last year (14 deaths).

In public construction projects, a total of 14 deaths occurred at construction sites commissioned by 12 institutions. Three deaths occurred at three sites commissioned by the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH). One death was recorded each at the Gyeonggi-do Ansan Office of Education, Gwangju Dong-gu Office, Mokpo City Hall, Pusan National University, Busan Regional Land Management Office, Suncheonman International Garden Expo Organizing Committee, Yeongcheon City Environmental Office, Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education Eastern Education Support Office, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Jeju City Hall, Jisan Elementary School, and Pyeongtaek Agricultural Technology Center.


The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to conduct surprise joint special inspections with related agencies at construction sites under the jurisdiction of the top 100 construction companies and their subcontractors where fatalities occurred in the first quarter, as well as at 14 public construction accident sites. If any violations are found, strong measures such as imposing demerit points for negligence will be taken.
