Reviving the Life Cycle of Rainwater... Ulsan City Accelerates the 'Water Circulation Leading City Development' Project

270 Billion KRW Invested in Jung-gu by 2025

‘LID Project’ to Prevent Direct Inflow into Streams

A project to restore the water circulation ecosystem by naturally absorbing rainwater into the soil is being carried out in Ulsan. The goal is to prevent rainwater blocked by concrete from directly flowing into rivers.

On the 24th, Ulsan City announced that it will invest 27 billion KRW by 2025 in the Namoe-dong, Haksan-dong, and Banggu-dong areas of Jung-gu to launch the "Water Circulation Leading City Creation" project.

Due to industrialization and urbanization, land is increasingly paved or covered with buildings and other structures, reducing the area where rainwater can infiltrate into surface soil. When such polluted rainwater cannot be absorbed into the ground and flows directly into rivers, it causes problems such as increased river water volume and deteriorated water quality.

The "Water Circulation Leading City Creation Project" aims to solve these problems by expanding green spaces and ecological areas to reduce rainwater runoff and restore the ecosystem's water circulation.

To promote the project, Ulsan City is investing 15 billion KRW in Namoe-dong, Jung-gu, and is conducting a Low Impact Development (LID) project with the goal of starting construction this year.

LID refers to using vegetated retention areas, rain gardens, permeable blocks, and other methods to allow rainwater to naturally absorb into the soil, mimicking the natural water circulation system.

This approach is expected to have significant effects such as reducing non-point source pollution, flood volume, heat islands, and restoring water circulation.

LID facilities such as vegetated retention areas, rain gardens, vegetated channels, and rooftop gardens are also effective in improving urban aesthetics.

Additionally, the LID facility installation project underway in Haksan-dong and Banggu-dong, Jung-gu, with a total budget of 12 billion KRW and aiming for completion in 2025, is scheduled to begin basic and detailed design services next month.

Ulsan City plans to secure 7 billion KRW in project funds by applying for the Jung-gu Hakseong-dong LID project as a new national subsidy project in 2024.
