An operation to eradicate invasive fish species that disrupt river ecosystems is being launched in Ulsan.
On the 22nd, Ulsan City announced plans to install 20 "bass artificial spawning grounds" around Samho Island in the Taehwa River to carry out the eradication work.
The artificial spawning grounds will be installed and operated around Samho Island starting from the 24th. When bass lay eggs in the artificial spawning grounds, the eggs will be removed.
Considering the habit of bass eggs hatching in 4 to 5 days after spawning, the eggs will be checked and removed 2 to 3 times a week. This operation will continue until mid-July, when the bass spawning season ends.
Bass is a representative invasive species designated and announced by the Ministry of Environment, mainly inhabiting reservoirs or slow-flowing rivers.
Bass feed on anything they encounter, rapidly reducing native fish species, and disrupt ecosystems through excessive reproduction, laying from hundreds to up to 10,000 eggs.
An official from Ulsan City said, "There are 53 species of fish living in the Taehwa River, including endemic species. By installing artificial spawning grounds, we aim to reduce the bass population, secure habitats for the Taehwa River's endemic species, and maintain biodiversity."
Since 2009, Ulsan City has been managing the bass population by installing artificial spawning grounds and removing 200,000 to 450,000 bass eggs annually.
