Gumi City in Gyeongbuk has finalized the nickname for the Gumi-si Gangdong Youth Culture House, scheduled to open this year, as ‘Chaebi-ON’.
From March 16 to March 31, an online contest for the nickname was held targeting the youth of Gumi City, receiving a total of 181 submissions.
After a review by the Youth Participation Organization, three candidates were selected, and from April 12 to April 16, a five-day online preference vote by the youth was conducted, resulting in ‘Chaebi-ON’ being chosen as the final name.
‘Chaebi-ON’ combines the Korean word ‘chaebi,’ meaning ‘preparing or getting ready in advance for something,’ and ‘ON,’ referring to the power button of digital devices. It symbolizes the Gumi-si Gangdong Youth Culture House as a space preparing the future of Alpha Generation youth, represented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital culture.
‘Gumi-si Gangdong Youth Culture House Chaebi-ON’ will be officially used upon the opening of the Culture House.
Scheduled to open in October this year in Sandong-eup, Gumi City, the Gumi-si Gangdong Youth Culture House will consist of a smart gym, dance studio, multiplex, study cafe, video creator room, coding experience room, rest cafe, and more, operating as a complex community space for youth and local residents.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho of Gumi City said, “Since the youth themselves proposed and reviewed the nickname, its meaning is significant,” adding, “We will actively support Gumi-si Gangdong Youth Culture House Chaebi-ON to provide quality programs for youth and to be a creative space that helps youth prepare for the future through voluntary participation and diverse information-sharing activities.”
