Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Munheon) will hold the ‘Queen Jeongsun, the Widow of King Danjong Cultural Festival’ at Dongmangbong in Sungin Neighborhood Park on the 22nd.

This event commemorates the loyalty of Queen Jeongsun, the widow of the 6th King of Joseon, Danjong, highlights the connection between Jongno and Queen Jeongsun, and aims to promote the valuable historical and cultural heritage of the area. The festival began in 2008 and is now in its 15th year.

The opening ceremony will begin at 3 PM with a pre-ceremony performance, followed by introductions of guests, congratulatory speeches, and the memorial rite.

Queen Jeongsun Song, who was appointed queen at a young age, was expelled from the palace when King Danjong was exiled to Yeongwol. After Danjong’s death, she is said to have climbed Dongmangbong daily to pray for his soul. After becoming a government servant, she had to sustain herself through hard dyeing work, during which the villagers held a women-only market to bring her sewing materials.

In response, Jongno-gu has developed and operates an alleyway tour course in Sungin-dong that covers related historical sites such as Cheongryongsa where Queen Jeongsun stayed, the site of Jeongeopwon, Dongmangbong (Dongmangjeong) where she prayed daily for Danjong’s safety, and Yeongdo Bridge where Danjong bid his last farewell when exiled to Yeongwol. Reservations for the alleyway guide program can be made through the ‘Historical and Cultural Tourism’ page on the district office website.

Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “We have organized this meaningful event to remember Queen Jeongsun, one of Jongno’s historical figures, and to raise historical awareness among all of us living today. We will develop the Queen Jeongsun Cultural Festival into a representative local event enjoyed not only by residents but also by domestic and international tourists visiting Jongno.”
