Gyeonggi Province has uncovered numerous cases of unauthorized road occupation violations that endangered pedestrian safety by parking ladder trucks on sidewalks without safety measures and conducting demolition work without permits.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police Unit announced on the 19th that, following an investigation into violations of the Road Act conducted from February to March, it identified 9 individuals involved in 8 cases of illegal road occupation by elevated work vehicle operators and others, all of whom were referred to the prosecution with charges.
Elevated work vehicles are specialized vehicles used to lift people to high places, primarily for tasks such as maintaining street trees, signboards, and building exterior construction.
Among the major cases uncovered, operators A and B were caught parking high ladder trucks on sidewalks in front of commercial buildings for 8 hours without obtaining road occupation permits from the relevant city authorities, while conducting waste removal work.
Signboard manufacturers C and D were found to have parked elevated work vehicles on sidewalks in densely commercial areas for 4 hours without safety devices, performing signboard installation work on buildings.
Under the current Road Act, actions that threaten pedestrian safety and cause inconvenience to traffic can result in imprisonment for up to 2 years or fines up to 20 million won.
Additionally, prior road occupation permits must be obtained to perform work using elevated work vehicles on roads.
Kim Kwang-deok, head of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police Unit, emphasized, "There should be no acts that threaten the safety of residents or cause inconvenience. The Special Judicial Police Unit considers such acts serious crimes and will proactively investigate to resolve residents' inconveniences."
