Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok Inspects Safety Condition of Mansok Overpass After 48 Years Since Completion

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok visited Manseok Overpass, which connects Jung-gu and Dong-gu, on the 18th to inspect the safety diagnosis status of the road bridge.

The on-site inspection was conducted to directly check the safety status of facilities in the Incheon area in relation to the recent bridge collapse accident in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province.

Earlier, since the 7th, the city instructed the Comprehensive Construction Headquarters managing road bridges and overpasses, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, and 10 districts and counties to conduct a comprehensive safety inspection of 273 bridges.

Among the 273 bridges in the region, 36 bridges have been completed for over 30 years and have a safety grade of C (average). However, there are no bridges identified with D (insufficient) or E (poor) grades that require immediate repair or reinforcement.

Manseok Overpass is a bridge crossing the Gyeongin Line, completed in 1975, with a length of 222.5m and a width of 13m. It has a safety grade of C, and a detailed safety inspection service is currently underway.

After receiving a report on the progress of the road bridge safety inspection from the head of the city’s Comprehensive Construction Headquarters, Mayor Yoo carefully examined the pedestrian section of Manseok Overpass for any abnormalities, checked for leakage or cracks in the floor slabs and girders, and inspected the foundations such as abutments and piers for cracks or damage.

Mayor Yoo stated, "To prevent facility safety accidents, it is crucial to conduct regular safety inspections and promptly repair or reinforce any defects or abnormal signs identified during inspections," urging thorough implementation of these measures.

He further told the safety inspection personnel, "Accidents occurring on road bridges and tunnels are directly related to citizens’ lives, so safety inspections must be conducted with professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility without any negligence."

Meanwhile, the city is investing a total of 11.4 billion KRW this year to carry out repair and reinforcement works such as resurfacing bridge decks and replacing expansion joints on road bridges and tunnels. Additionally, after completing safety inspections by June, immediate repair and reinforcement works will be conducted on facilities where serious defects are found.
