Samsung SDI Targets Chinese Batteries... Showcases Ultra-Advanced Technology at 'Auto Shanghai'

Private Booths for Clients
Showcasing High Energy Density and Fast Charging Technology

Samsung SDI showcased its cutting-edge battery technology targeting the Chinese electric vehicle battery market.

On the 18th, Samsung SDI participated in 'Auto Shanghai 2023,' China's largest motor show held in Shanghai, setting up a private booth for customers and unveiling its 'high energy density' and 'fast charging' technologies. 'Auto Shanghai,' also known as 'Auto China,' is one of China's largest motor shows, alternating annually with the Beijing Motor Show. This marked Samsung SDI's fifth participation since 2014.

Samsung SDI first revealed various electric vehicle battery products, including the P6 (6th generation prismatic battery), which achieves high energy density and fast charging performance through high-nickel NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum) and its proprietary silicone material SCN (Silicone Carbon Nanocomposite) technology.

The P6 increases the nickel content in the cathode to 91% and applies silicone material to the anode, improving energy density by more than 10% compared to the previous P5 (5th generation prismatic battery). The P6 can charge over 80% in just 10 minutes and is scheduled for mass production in 2024.

Samsung SDI also showcased a 46-pi cylindrical battery. The 46-pi product is a new platform that enlarges the size and maximizes performance compared to existing cylindrical batteries.

Samsung SDI introduced its solid-state battery roadmap, planned for mass production in 2027, outlining the future direction of battery technology development. The company plans to complete a solid-state battery pilot line at its Suwon research center in the first half of this year and begin prototype production.

For the first time in the Chinese market, Samsung SDI also introduced its battery brand PRiMX. The name PRiMX is an abbreviation of 'Prime Battery for Maximum Experience,' meaning 'providing customers with the best experience through the highest quality battery.'

Samsung SDI has been strengthening its capabilities in the Chinese market, recently establishing a research and development (R&D) center in China. The 'SDI R&D China (SDIRC)' established in Shanghai plans to enhance its collaboration network with top Chinese universities and research institutions to secure specialized technologies. The research center will also build a battery material verification lab to discover and validate new materials.
