Korea Transportation Safety Authority Conducts Free Inspection of Driving Recorders

Operation of Inspection Centers at Rest Areas Until December 22

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority announced that from the 17th until December 22, it will operate free inspection centers for Digital Tachographs (DTG) at highway rest areas, cargo terminals, and other locations.

A Digital Tachograph is a device that automatically records a vehicle's driving speed, location, heading, and distance traveled via GPS onto an electronic memory device.

The Authority plans to expand the free inspection centers from the existing 21 locations to a total of 23 locations, including 8 rest areas and 15 cargo terminals, to provide more services.

The operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and anyone visiting the free inspection centers during the operation period can have their Digital Tachograph inspected free of charge.

At the free inspection centers, issues such as power failure, missing basic information input, and poor mounting conditions will be repaired on-site at no cost, and if the driver wishes, the driving record data will be submitted to the system free of charge.

However, in cases of wiring faults, device malfunctions, or when other parts need to be replaced, the cost of purchasing parts must be paid separately.

Kwon Yong-bok, Chairman of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, stated, “Cargo trucks have a high risk of causing major traffic accidents due to drowsy driving and failure to comply with rest times,” and added, “We will take measures to allow drivers to rest while their vehicles are being inspected at the free inspection centers.”
