The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency will conduct a special crackdown on violations of laws in school zones in front of schools from the 17th to May 31st.
According to the provincial police agency, the special crackdown will be carried out by a mobile enforcement team composed of an undercover patrol team and a motorcycle patrol team (Saika team).
The mobile enforcement team will select 46 elementary school zones in urban areas classified as level 1 and 2 within the province, focusing on accident-prone areas with high traffic volume and frequent reports of violations. They will crack down on signal violations by buses, large freight vehicles, motorcycles, and violations of pedestrian protection.
At police stations within the province, during school commute times and the high-accident period from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., personnel from the education office, school officials, Green Mothers' Association, and Model Drivers' Association members will be deployed to strengthen child pedestrian protection activities.
The provincial police agency revealed that over the past three years, there were 492 child traffic accidents in 2020, 479 in 2021, and 473 in 2022 within the province.
Among these, the highest number of accidents, 592 cases, occurred between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. after school, accounting for 41% of the total.
School zone accidents numbered 25 in 2020, 19 in 2021, and 29 in 2022, showing a continuous increase. Additionally, last year in Changnyeong, there was a fatal accident involving a child in a school zone.
To prevent recurrence of a child traffic accident that occurred on the 3rd in Jangcheon, Jinhae-gu, Changwon City, the provincial police agency plans to hold a Best One Team meeting on the 18th with Gyeongnam Province, the provincial education office, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Jangcheon Elementary School, and transportation companies participating in the traffic practitioners' council.
A representative of the provincial police agency stated, “To protect children, we will continuously enforce traffic laws and promote related information so that drivers comply with traffic regulations and drive slowly in school zones, establishing a safe traffic culture.”
