"30s Woman Who Lied Over 50 Times Saying 'I Will Send Money' Ordered to Pay 5 Million Won in Compensation"

A woman in her 30s who deceived others by saying she would "make a bank transfer" and skipped paying for food over 50 times was sentenced to prison.

On the 17th, the Busan District Court Criminal Division 6 (Presiding Judge Sa Kyunghwa) announced that it sentenced Ms. A, who was indicted on fraud charges, to four months in prison and ordered her to pay 5 million won to the claimant.

Ms. A was brought to trial on charges of ordering food 54 times through a smartphone delivery app between June and July 2021, then failing to pay for the meals, causing property damage worth approximately 2.07 million won to restaurants.

According to the court, the delivery orders placed by Ms. A included a variety of items such as sushi, hamburgers, beer, coffee, and desserts. She lied to delivery workers by saying, "If you give me your account number, I will transfer the payment soon," but did not pay.

Ms. A claimed that she ordered the food for employees at the clothing store she operated and that she was unable to pay due to financial difficulties.

The court ruled, "The place where the food was delivered was not a clothing store, and Ms. A has no record of subscribing to the National Pension or Employment Insurance," concluding that she had no intention or ability to pay for the food from the start.

Separately, Ms. A is also accused of visiting a pork cutlet specialty restaurant in Busan in April 2021, introducing herself as a writer for a certain general cable TV program, and extorting 5 million won in two installments.

She demanded sponsorship fees from the restaurant owner, saying, "We are about to shoot a web drama and are looking for restaurants to use as filming locations," and collected money from the owner.

The court explained, "Ms. A committed these crimes during the period when she was given a suspended sentence for similar offenses," adding, "However, we took into consideration that Ms. A partially admitted her wrongdoing and pledged to make restitution."
