Especially during the challenging times of COVID-19, the two cities exchanged letters of mutual support and encouragement, and Gumi City provided 20,000 masks to Bishkek, solidifying their friendly relationship.
On the 19th, the delegation will visit Bishkek City Hall to meet with Mayor Abdykadyrov Emilbek and begin by signing a cooperation agreement. They will also attend the naming ceremony of the upgraded "Korea-Kyrgyz Friendship Park," originally established as Gumi Park in November 2013.
Additionally, the delegation will meet with local diplomatic and institutional officials, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kyrgyz Republic, the Director of the Korean Education Center, the Head of the Human Resources Development Service of Korea Center, and the Director of the National Museum, to exchange in-depth opinions on revitalizing cultural and economic exchanges between the two cities. They will also hold a meeting inviting descendants of Wangsan Heo Wi to reflect on the significance of national defense and veterans’ honor.
Bishkek, with an area of 169.9 km² and a population of 1.1 million, is the capital and administrative and economic center of the Kyrgyz Republic. It serves as a gateway and strategic point connecting Central Asia with Europe and China, endowed with abundant natural resources. Operating an open trade and investment system, Bishkek has achieved steady economic development, which is expected to further activate exchanges between the two cities.
Amid the growing emphasis on "cooperation and solidarity between international cities" as a solution to recent global complex crises, Gumi City has expanded its international cooperation since the launch of its 8th mayoral term by newly establishing sister city relationships with Bac Ninh City in Vietnam, Wolfsburg City in Germany, and Grenoble Alpes Metropole in France.
In particular, through this visit to the Kyrgyz Republic, Gumi plans to expand exchanges into the Central Asian region and broaden the horizon of "city diplomacy" by promoting practical international cooperation with existing sister cities.
