The action movie starring Keanu Reeves, 'John Wick 4,' started off at number one at the box office during its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network on the 17th, 'John Wick 4' (directed by Chad Stahelski) attracted 498,594 viewers over the three-day weekend (14th-16th), securing the top spot at the box office. Since its release on the 12th, it has drawn a cumulative audience of 726,269.
'John Wick 4' is an action blockbuster that tells the story of John Wick, who risks everything for freedom and prepares to strike back by launching a massive war to overthrow the High Table. It is the fourth installment in the series, following the popular 2015 action film 'John Wick' starring Keanu Reeves.
The film attracted nearly 500,000 viewers during its opening weekend, drawing significant attention. The strong fandom from the previous films appears to have mobilized viewers in their 30s and 40s.
In second place was the Japanese animated film 'Suzume no Tojimari' (directed by Makoto Shinkai), which attracted 248,615 viewers. Since its release on the 8th of last month, it has accumulated 4,696,851 viewers. The film surpassed 'The First Slam Dunk' to become the highest-grossing theatrical release of the year so far.
Two ambitious Korean films released this month showed disappointing results. The basketball movie 'Rebound' (directed by Jang Hang-jun), released on the 5th, attracted 119,945 viewers, ranking third. Its cumulative audience remained at 485,094. The comedy 'Killing Romance' (directed by Lee Won-seok), released on the 14th, drew 62,954 viewers, starting off in fourth place.
Fifth place went to 'The First Slam Dunk,' sixth to 'Mirror: A Tale of the Lonely Castle,' seventh to 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,' and eighth to 'Air.'
The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was counted at 1,057,124.
