Enjoying Together from Toddlers to Seniors at ‘Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark’

Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, operates an educational program for the Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark that involves participants of various ages, from infants to seniors.

This year’s educational programs include hands-on activities designed to make the geopark easier and more enjoyable to understand, such as experiencing the volcanic eruption of Juwangsan with a geopark guide, making Mesozoic dinosaur frames, and creating sedimentary rock pot coasters.

In particular, the programs, which were previously focused mainly on infants or specific towns and townships, have expanded the age range to include seniors and extended the area to all eight towns and townships, aiming to spread geopark policies across all ages and regions.

“Cheongsong Geopark and Dreaming Children” is a representative program for infants and children that introduces Cheongsong Geopark through play and hands-on experiences. It is planned in cooperation with Cheongsong-gun After School Academy, local children’s centers, and Hwamok Kindergarten to support healthy growth and development of children.

Additionally, the “Cheongsong Geopark Cooperative Schools” program targets four cooperative schools in the area (Pacheon Elementary School, Cheongsong Middle School, Jinseong Middle School, and Cheongsong Girls’ Middle and High School), providing opportunities to experience geology and nature firsthand, which are usually learned only from textbooks.

In particular, Pacheon Elementary School has organized and operates “Our Local Geology Trip” as a region-linked subject in the 2023 Future Curriculum.

The representative senior-targeted program, “Visiting Cheongsong Geopark,” allows local seniors to enjoy geopark educational programs without geographical restrictions. Cheongsong Geopark guides visit locations such as Imha Dam Senior Welfare Center, Geumgok-ri Senior Center, and Senior University to conduct experiential education, receiving high praise from the elderly.
