Miryang Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex Designated as Smart Green Industrial Complex

Energy Self-Reliance, Digital Innovation, Eco-Friendly

and Human New Deal: Building Four Advanced Industries

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has designated the ‘Miryang Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex’ in Gyeongnam as a ‘Smart Green Industrial Complex.’

The designation of Miryang Nano Convergence Smart Green National Industrial Complex is the third case nationwide following the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex and Daegu Yulha Urban High-tech Industrial Complex.

A Smart Green Industrial Complex is a distinctive industrial complex that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by more than 25%, improving chronic environmental problems in industrial complexes. It is a future-oriented industrial complex that promotes digitalization of resident companies, infrastructure, residential facilities, support facilities, and public facilities, as well as energy self-sufficiency and eco-friendliness.

Miryang City has been visiting related ministries and agencies since early 2019 with the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, the project implementer, to promote the Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex as a Smart Green Industrial Complex where resident companies can respond to climate change and realize carbon neutrality and ESG management.

The Smart Green Industrial Complex promoted by Gyeongnam Province and Miryang City aims to create Korea’s best premium industrial complex by implementing a total of four core strategies and 36 detailed projects for resident companies. The core strategies include two strategies linked to the government’s Smart Green Industrial Complex policy: low-carbon energy self-sufficiency and manufacturing innovation, and two regional specialized projects: creation of new industrial infrastructure for nano-industry promotion and youth happiness.

First, the energy self-sufficiency strategy aims for an energy self-sufficiency rate of 14.5% and a CO2 emission reduction rate of 26.1% by introducing hydrogen fuel cell power plants, solar power, and energy storage systems (ESS).

In September 2021, a business agreement was signed among energy public institutions such as Korea Electric Power Corporation and Korea East-West Power, the project implementer LH, Gyeongnam Province, and Miryang City regarding the purchase and use of sites related to ESS and hydrogen fuel cell power plants. Additionally, a waste heat utilization circulation system will be established to recycle waste heat generated from hydrogen fuel cells, ESS, and industrial processes, using it as an energy source within the complex.

As a digital innovation strategy, a smart logistics center will be introduced to automate, informatize, and intelligentize the entire logistics processing process, and intelligent CCTVs, smart crosswalks, and smart poles will be installed to build a smart living environment. An energy management digital platform for companies within the industrial complex will be introduced to analyze energy consumption patterns and visualize energy flow in real time within the complex.

As an eco-friendly strategy, various low-impact development techniques such as permeable pavement and securing ecological areas (10?40%) for industrial facility sites will be applied, and a fine dust blocking forest will be created for workers. Furthermore, hydrogen and electric vehicle charging stations will be installed, and power lines will be buried underground to create an eco-friendly advanced industrial complex.

As a human new deal strategy, 300 support housing units will be constructed for industrial complex workers. A Youth Happiness Nurim Center, sports facilities, and a public library will be established to comprehensively provide culture, communication, and welfare for local youth, making it a place where youth can stay and work.

Gyeongnam Province and Miryang City plan to conduct related public contests for projects such as the energy management digital platform and the industrial complex digital twin center following the designation of the Nano Convergence Smart Green National Industrial Complex.

Mayor Park Il-ho said, “We expect the Nano Convergence Smart Green National Industrial Complex to become an innovation hub leading regional growth, and we will strive to develop it into a premium industrial complex representing our country.”
