SEMI "Last Year's Global Semiconductor Equipment Sales Hit Record High of $107.6 Billion"

International Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Association (SEMI) Statistics Announcement

Last year, global semiconductor equipment sales increased to $107.6 billion, marking a record high. However, this figure was lower than the previously forecasted sales of $108.5 billion.

The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced on the 14th that last year's global semiconductor equipment sales rose 5% from the previous year ($102.6 billion) to $107.6 billion. They also noted that this marked the third consecutive year of record-breaking sales since 2020. However, last year's sales were below the earlier forecast. SEMI had projected sales of $108.5 billion for last year in December.

Ajit Manocha, CEO of SEMI, explained, "The growth in high-performance computing and automotive semiconductor sectors is driving increased demand for semiconductor fab production capacity expansion," adding, "This has led to last year's semiconductor equipment sales reaching an all-time high."

By region, last year's semiconductor equipment sales were highest in the following order: ▲China ($28.27 billion) ▲Taiwan ($26.82 billion) ▲Korea ($21.51 billion) ▲North America ($10.48 billion) ▲Japan ($8.35 billion) ▲Europe ($6.28 billion).

In terms of year-over-year sales growth rates, the order was ▲Europe (93%) ▲North America (38%) ▲Taiwan (8%) ▲Japan (7%) ▲China (-5%) ▲Korea (-14%).

Despite reduced investment compared to the previous year, China maintained the highest semiconductor equipment sales for the third consecutive year through last year. Taiwan, which ranked second, showed sales growth for the fourth consecutive year.

By segment, wafer processing equipment sales increased by 8% last year. Other front-end process segments grew by 11%. In contrast, packaging and assembly equipment sales, which showed strong growth in 2021, declined by 19% last year. Test equipment sales also decreased by 4%.
