On the 14th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that following the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex and Daegu Yulha Urban High-tech Industrial Complex, the Miryang Nano Convergence Industrial Complex will be designated as the nation's third Smart Green Industrial Complex.
A Smart Green Industrial Complex refers to an industrial complex that minimizes energy use and expands the supply of renewable energy by establishing transportation, logistics, and energy infrastructure. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25%.
Although industrial complexes occupy 1.4% of the national land area, they emit 45% of total greenhouse gases, 38% of fine dust, and 19% of waste, highlighting the need for Smart Green Industrial Complexes to address environmental issues.
The Miryang Nano Convergence National Industrial Complex was designated as an industrial complex in May 2017 and currently has a construction progress rate of 70%. Completion is targeted for October next year. The Miryang complex plans to use renewable energy by installing solar power facilities (20 MW) and a hydrogen fuel cell power plant (15 MW), and will also establish an energy management digital platform capable of predicting and analyzing the total energy consumption within the industrial complex. Hydrogen fuel cells and energy storage systems (ESS) will be operated, and waste heat generated from industrial processes will be recycled as an energy source.
Through these measures, it is expected that carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 26% annually compared to operating as a conventional industrial complex. The costs for establishing the Smart Green Industrial Complex will be secured through the Miryang city budget and by attracting central government public projects. Renewable energy power generation operators will also be attracted.
