According to foreign media including the AP News, NBC, and the UK daily The Guardian on the 12th (local time), Schwarzenegger posted a video on Facebook and Twitter on the 11th showing him and two workers filling a long hole on a road in Brentwood, LA, where he resides, with asphalt.
In the post accompanying the video, he wrote, "I came out to fix this huge pothole that has been causing accidents with passing cars and bicycles for weeks because I couldn’t stand seeing my neighbors suffer," adding, "Don’t complain, instead do something."
In the video, Schwarzenegger wore black sunglasses, a brown leather jacket, and matching leather boots, reminiscent of his appearance in the movie 'Terminator,' as he worked. He poured asphalt into the hole on the road surface with other workers, leveled it with a shovel, swept the area, and then sprinkled soil over the asphalt with his hands.
The video also captured a female resident driving by near the work site, rolling down her car window and waving her hand while saying "Thank you." Schwarzenegger replied, "You’re welcome." He then said, "It’s ridiculous that (the neighborhood residents) have to fill the road themselves," adding, "I waited three weeks for the person responsible to fill the pothole."
However, it turned out that the hole he filled was not a defect but a ditch deliberately dug by a gas company for maintenance work.
An LA city spokesperson told NBC, "That is not a pothole but a ditch dug with permission by SoCalGas for maintenance work scheduled through May," adding, "SoCalGas plans to fill the hole after completing the work." NBC reported that neither Schwarzenegger nor SoCalGas has commented on the situation yet.
The Guardian stated, "Schwarzenegger didn’t solve the problem like in the movie 'Terminator' but rather created one," adding, "The gas company now has to dig up the filled ditch again to complete the contract."
Schwarzenegger also served as the Governor of California from 2003 to 2011 and has been active as a politician.
